Terry Pratchett - Guards! Guards!

Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett is the eighth discworld novel, first published in 1989. It introduces - well - the City Guard. Captain Vimes is in bad shape, drinking and not caring much about right and wrong in Ankh-Morpork.
A secret brotherhood, the Unique and Supreme Lodge of the Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night, wants to overthrow the Patrician Lord Vetinari. They want to have a puppet king under their control. To reach their goal they summon a dragon to strike fear into the people of Ankh-Morpork. As they use a stolen magic book to summon the dragon the librarian takes part in the hunt with the Watch to find the responsible people. Additional help comes from Lady Sybil Ramkin (Vimes' future wife) who's an expert in dragons and half-unvoluntarily by Carrot who just joined the Watch.
Of course Vimes saves the city and takes a turn to the good side obeying the law from now on.
The story is exciting and funny, the new characters interesting and well-designed.
Well-read by Tony Robinson. Loved it.
